Rishabh Pant Creates History in Galle, Breaks Adam Gilchrist’s Record

Rishabh Pant may not have produced a big score in India’s first innings against Sri Lanka in the ongoing first Test at Galle, but the Indian wicketkeeper-batter still managed to script a major piece of Test history.

Pant scored 39 runs off 62 balls, including four boundaries and one six, at a strike rate of 62.90. That solitary six proved enough to take him past Australian legend Adam Gilchrist in the list of batters with the most sixes in away Test matches.

Pant has now smashed 57 sixes in Test matches played outside India, moving ahead of Gilchrist, who had 56. However, the overall list is led by England’s Ben Stokes, who has 69 sixes in away Tests.

Pant Leaves Gilchrist Behind

The latest milestone is particularly significant because Pant is often compared with Gilchrist for his aggressive batting style and impact as a wicketkeeper-batter.

The current list of most sixes in away Tests features:

Ben Stokes – 69 sixes

Rishabh Pant – 57 sixes

Adam Gilchrist – 56 sixes

Chris Gayle – 51 sixes

Jacques Kallis – 45 sixes

Pant’s latest six also took his overall tally in Test cricket to 98 sixes. He is now just two sixes away from becoming only the fourth player to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket, joining an elite group that includes Ben Stokes, Brendon McCullum and Adam Gilchrist.

While his 39-run knock was not a match-defining innings, Pant once again demonstrated why his attacking approach has made him one of India’s most dangerous Test batters.

With the Galle Test still underway, all eyes will now be on Pant’s next innings. Two more sixes could see him reach another historic milestone.
