Shehzad Poonawalla Resigns from BJP Again, Cites Personal and Financial Reasons

New Delhi | August 17, 2026: BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has once again announced his resignation from the party, citing personal and financial circumstances.

In a letter addressed to BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Poonawalla requested to be relieved of his position as national spokesperson and from the party’s active primary membership.

This comes weeks after his earlier resignation offer on July 30, which the BJP had not accepted at the time and had instead asked him to reconsider.

In his latest letter, Poonawalla said that after serious consideration, he had decided to stand by his decision. He also referred to recent developments and circumstances involving certain individuals, saying these had strengthened his resolve, without providing further details.

Poonawalla expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other senior leaders for the opportunities and platform he received during his five years with the party.

Support for Modi, Ideology Continues

Poonawalla clarified that his decision to leave the BJP does not mean abandoning his support for Prime Minister Modi or the party’s ideology. He said he plans to move into the private sector due to his personal and financial circumstances.

Concluding his letter, Poonawalla wrote that he was “leaving the system, not the person or the ideology.”
