India Edge Past England in Run-Fest to Reach T20 World Cup 2026 Final

New Delhi: Defending champions India booked their place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final after defeating England by seven runs in a thrilling, high-scoring semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In a match that turned into a run-fest, India posted a massive 253/7 after being put in to bat. England fought valiantly in response but eventually fell short, finishing at 246/7, as both teams combined for 499 runs — the highest aggregate in a men’s T20 World Cup match.

The star of the night was Sanju Samson, who delivered a sensational knock of 89 off 42 balls, smashing eight fours and seven sixes. Samson dominated the English bowling attack and laid the foundation for India’s imposing total. He built crucial partnerships, including a rapid 97-run stand with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 39 from 18 balls, and a quick 43-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who scored 43 off 25 balls.

India’s power-packed batting lineup continued the assault as Hardik Pandya (27 off 12) and Tilak Varma (21 off 7) added late fireworks. The hosts hammered 19 sixes and 18 fours, collecting a remarkable 186 runs in boundaries.

England’s chase began on a shaky note after early wickets of Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Harry Brook. However, Jacob Bethell kept England in the contest with a magnificent 105 off 48 balls, featuring eight fours and seven sixes.

Despite Bethell’s heroics, India held their nerve in the final overs. Tight bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and outstanding fielding efforts — particularly by Axar Patel — proved decisive as England fell just seven runs short.

India will now face New Zealand in the final in Ahmedabad, aiming to defend their title and create history in the tournament.
