Bihar Government Renames Key Institutions, Drops Sanjay Gandhi References
Cabinet led by Samrat Choudhary approves changes to Patna Zoo and dairy institute, signaling administrative shift
In a notable decision, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Bihar government has initiated the renaming of prominent state-run institutions. The cabinet has approved proposals to remove the name of Sanjay Gandhi from both Patna Zoo and a key dairy technology institute.
The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park will now be officially known as “Patna Zoo.” Similarly, the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology has been renamed the “Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology.” The decisions were finalized during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Situated near Bailey Road in Patna, the zoo was opened to the public in 1973 and spans 153 acres, housing over 800 animals from more than 110 species. It was originally named after Sanjay Gandhi, the elder son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Meanwhile, the dairy institute—established in 1980 and recognized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)—continues to offer B.Tech and M.Tech programs in dairy technology, contributing to the state's agricultural education sector.
The move reflects a broader administrative direction under the current government and has sparked conversations around political legacy and institutional identity.
