The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday inaugurated its Annual Sports Week 2026 at the Commonwealth Games Sports Complex in New Delhi, marking the start of a week-long series of sporting events aimed at promoting fitness, teamwork, and institutional camaraderie. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar formally opened the celebrations and addressed participants at the venue.
In his remarks, the CEC drew parallels between sportsmanship and the principles guiding India’s electoral system. He observed that values central to sports — transparency, integrity, discipline, and impartiality — closely mirror those upheld by the ECI in conducting free and fair elections.
Encouraging enthusiastic participation, he urged employees to embrace the spirit of healthy competition and collective engagement. Following the inaugural address, Gyanesh Kumar flagged off the 100-metre women’s race आयोजित under the theme “Run For Democracy.” The overarching theme for this year’s event is “Harmony on the Field, Strength in Democracy.”
Organised by the ECI Recreation Club, the Sports Week features 383 participants, including 72 women. Competitions will be held across 43 categories spanning seven sports: chess, carrom, table tennis, badminton, cricket, football, and athletics. Track events include 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m races for men and women across multiple age groups.
The initiative reflects the Commission’s emphasis on employee well-being and team spirit alongside professional excellence.
