West Bengal Polls 2026: Massive Turnout Marks Crucial Phase 2 Amid Tensions
Nearly 90% voter turnout by evening across 142 seats; clashes and EVM concerns surface as high-stakes battle intensifies
The second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 recorded an impressive voter turnout of nearly 89.99% by 5 p.m., reflecting strong public participation across 142 constituencies. According to the Election Commission, districts like Purba Bardhaman (92.46%) and Hooghly (90.34%) led the turnout charts.
This phase, covering key regions including Kolkata, Howrah, and North and South 24 Parganas, is widely viewed as decisive for the state’s political future. The spotlight remained on Bhabanipur, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced a high-profile challenge from BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.
While polling was largely peaceful, sporadic clashes and allegations of voter intimidation were reported from several districts such as Nadia, Hooghly, and South 24 Parganas. Security forces intervened in multiple instances to restore order.
Concerns over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) also emerged during the day, with allegations of tampering and malfunction. State Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal confirmed that repolling may be conducted in booths where irregularities are verified.
Political tensions remained high, with Mamata Banerjee accusing central forces of bias, while leaders from the opposition raised concerns about electoral fairness and transparency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the high turnout and encouraged continued participation.
With heavy deployment of security forces set to continue even after polling, authorities aim to maintain stability during the post-election period. The results, scheduled for May 4, will determine whether the ruling Trinamool Congress retains power or if the BJP secures a significant breakthrough.
