Bengal Votes 2026: High Turnout, Clashes, and Fierce Political Battle in Phase 2

The second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 saw strong voter participation alongside rising political tensions across 142 constituencies on Wednesday. With over 3.22 crore eligible voters, this phase is considered decisive in determining the state’s political direction.

By early afternoon, voter turnout crossed 61%, with districts such as Hooghly and Nadia reporting significant participation. The Election Commission stated that polling was largely peaceful, supported by heavy deployment of central forces and strict monitoring.

Despite this, several incidents of unrest were reported. In Kolkata’s Bhabanipur, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged he was attacked by TMC supporters during a booth visit, prompting police to use force to disperse crowds. Reports of alleged EVM malfunctions, voter intimidation, and clashes also emerged from areas like Basanti, Falta, and Panihati.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused election authorities of bias, while TMC leaders pointed to mismanagement and concerns over voter roll revisions. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the high turnout and described the voting environment as free and confident.

The contest remains intense, especially in South Bengal and Kolkata, where political stakes are at their highest. The results, set to be announced on May 4, will decide whether the TMC retains power or the BJP makes a major breakthrough in the state.
