West Bengal BJP Government Reviews VIP Security, Cuts Protection for Several TMC Leaders

Following the change in power in West Bengal, the newly formed BJP government has initiated a major review of VIP security arrangements, resulting in significant reductions in protection for several high-profile leaders, former police officials, and political figures associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

As part of the administrative restructuring, the state Home Department has reportedly withdrawn house guards stationed outside the residences of several prominent personalities, including TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee, senior TMC leader Subrata Bakshi, former police chief Rajeev Kumar, and former minister Aroop Biswas.

According to officials, the latest threat perception assessment concluded that several individuals no longer require enhanced security arrangements. However, authorities have clarified that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s security cover will remain unchanged. Sources said one of the biggest changes involves Abhishek Banerjee, whose Z-Plus security and pilot vehicle facilities have reportedly been withdrawn. Police personnel deployed outside his residence in Kalighat and office premises on Camac Street have also allegedly been removed.

Under the revised security guidelines, Kalyan Banerjee and Rajeev Kumar will now reportedly receive protection based only on their present official status, while former minister Aroop Biswas has lost his earlier security due to not holding any current ministerial or legislative role.

TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh has also reportedly seen his additional security removed and will now receive only MLA-level protection.

The move is part of a broader review by the new administration, which has stated that security cover should be based strictly on actual threat perception and official requirements.
