KKR Stay Alive in Playoff Race After Crucial Win Over Mumbai Indians
Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell guide Kolkata Knight Riders to a four-wicket victory as Mumbai Indians slump to their ninth defeat of the season.
Kolkata Knight Riders kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a crucial four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Match 65 of the Indian Premier League 2026 season at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
Facing a must-win situation to remain in playoff contention, KKR delivered a disciplined all-round performance to restrict Mumbai Indians to 147/8 before chasing down the target in 18.5 overs.
After winning the toss, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bowl first on a difficult Eden Gardens pitch. KKR’s bowlers made full use of the conditions, with Sunil Narine leading the charge through a tight spell, while Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey chipped in with key wickets to keep Mumbai under pressure.
Mumbai’s batting lineup struggled to build momentum on the sticky surface. Captain Hardik Pandya managed 26 runs, while Rohit Sharma failed to convert his start, departing for 15. Narine eventually dismissed Hardik with a delivery that stayed low and crashed into the stumps, further denting MI’s hopes of posting a competitive total.
Chasing 148, KKR endured an uneasy start after losing both openers inside the powerplay. However, veteran batter Manish Pandey stepped up with a composed 45 off 33 deliveries, stabilizing the innings at No. 3. He found strong support from Rovman Powell, whose quickfire 40 helped build a match-defining 64-run partnership.
Although Mumbai briefly threatened a comeback with late wickets, KKR comfortably crossed the finish line thanks to calm finishing touches from Rinku Singh and Anukul Roy.
The victory lifted KKR from eighth to sixth place in the standings, keeping their playoff dreams alive. However, qualification is no longer in their hands. Kolkata will now closely monitor Rajasthan Royals’ upcoming fixture, as a Royals victory would officially end KKR’s playoff campaign before their final league match against Delhi Capitals.
For Mumbai Indians, the defeat marked their ninth loss in 13 matches, leaving the five-time champions second from bottom in what has been a disappointing season.
