Kolkata Knight Riders kept their playoff hopes alive with a hard-fought four-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in Match 65 of the Indian Premier League 2026 season at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
In a must-win encounter, KKR produced a disciplined bowling display to limit Mumbai Indians to 147/8 before chasing the target with seven balls to spare.
After electing to bowl first, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane saw his bowlers exploit the challenging conditions brilliantly. Sunil Narine once again proved decisive, delivering an economical spell that put pressure on Mumbai’s batting lineup. Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey also contributed with timely breakthroughs.
Mumbai Indians struggled to gain momentum throughout their innings. Skipper Hardik Pandya top-scored with 26, while Rohit Sharma’s innings ended at 15 just as he looked set to accelerate. Narine’s dismissal of Hardik proved a turning point, as the spinner’s deceptive delivery crashed into the stumps.
KKR’s chase started nervously after early setbacks in the powerplay, but experienced batter Manish Pandey steadied the innings with a composed 45 off 33 balls. He combined effectively with Rovman Powell, who added a valuable 40, as the duo stitched together a crucial 64-run partnership.
Despite a few late wickets, KKR remained in control, with Rinku Singh and Anukul Roy calmly guiding the team over the line in 18.5 overs.
The victory moved Kolkata from eighth to sixth in the points table, though their playoff destiny still depends on other results. A win for Rajasthan Royals in their upcoming clash would officially eliminate KKR before their final league-stage match against Delhi Capitals.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians suffered their ninth defeat in 13 matches, remaining near the bottom of the standings in a disappointing campaign.
