West Bengal Assembly Elections Phase 1 Largely Peaceful Amid Scattered Incidents of Violence

The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections concluded on a largely peaceful note, with only a few scattered incidents of violence reported across different districts. Despite isolated clashes and allegations of intimidation, the Election Commission maintained strict vigilance throughout the day, operating a continuous monitoring system from its control room to ensure smooth polling.

Voting was held in 152 Assembly constituencies spread across 16 districts, covering the entirety of North Bengal, western regions of the state, as well as Murshidabad, Paschim Bardhaman, and Purba Medinipur. Polling began at 7:00 AM and continued till 6:00 PM, witnessing active participation from voters.

However, tensions were reported from several areas. In Naoda, Murshidabad, a heated altercation between supporters of Am Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir and workers of the Trinamool Congress escalated into physical clashes, leading to vandalism of vehicles. Police and central forces later intervened to bring the situation under control. The same region had witnessed incidents of bomb explosions on the eve of polling, with allegations of voter intimidation directed at the ruling party.

In Birbhum’s Labhpur, violence marred the democratic process as a BJP polling agent was allegedly assaulted, resulting in serious head injuries. The BJP accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the attack, a charge that the ruling party firmly denied.

Further allegations emerged from Tufanganj in Cooch Behar district, where voters claimed they were threatened, prompting police intervention to stabilize the situation. In Malatipur, Malda, Congress candidate Mausam Benazir Noor raised concerns over compromised voter secrecy, alleging that an open window in a polling booth exposed voters. Poll officials, however, clarified that the window was kept open due to insufficient lighting.

Prominent political leaders actively participated in the electoral process, exercising their franchise early in the day. Union Minister and BJP leader Dr. Sukanta Majumdar cast his vote, while BJP candidate from Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari, also voted in the morning. BJP leader Agnimitra Paul voted in Asansol, and party candidate Dilip Ghosh cast his vote in Kharagpur Sadar.

Despite sporadic unrest, the overall polling process in Phase 1 remained largely orderly, reflecting the resilience of democratic participation in the state.
