“This is Bengal, not Bihar or Maharashtra…” — TMC Targets Election Body, Mamata Reacts After Strong Room Visit
Tensions rise before May 4 results as Mamata Banerjee alleges irregularities in EVM storage; election authorities deny claims.
As West Bengal prepares for the Assembly election results on May 4, 2026, the political climate has already intensified. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised serious concerns about alleged irregularities in strong rooms where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are stored.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited a strong room at Sakhawat Memorial School in Kolkata and remained there for several hours. Speaking to reporters afterward, she said she decided to inspect the site after seeing reports of possible issues.
“I came here because this is where the EVMs are kept. We have received information about irregularities at multiple locations. After watching it on television, I felt it was necessary to come personally,” she said. Banerjee also claimed that central security personnel initially tried to stop her. “When I asserted my right, I was allowed to proceed. According to election rules, candidates are permitted to go up to the outer area of sealed strong rooms,” she added. She warned that her party would take action if any tampering is detected.
The TMC has accused the Election Commission of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party of working together to undermine democracy. The party alleged that suspicious activity was taking place around strong rooms without their representatives present.
However, Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal rejected all allegations, stating that the strong rooms are securely sealed and cannot be accessed by unauthorized individuals. He also stressed a zero-tolerance approach toward any post-election violence and instructed officials to act strictly against violations.
On social media, TMC stated, “This is Bengal. We are not Bihar, Maharashtra, or Delhi. We will not be part of any conspiracy. Every action will receive a strong response.”
Meanwhile, BJP leader Amit Malviya criticized Banerjee’s actions, calling them dramatic and suggesting they reflect anxiety ahead of the election results.
With only a few days left before the final outcome, the political atmosphere in West Bengal continues to heat up.
