Stormy Budget Session Likely as Motion to Remove Speaker Om Birla Tops Agenda
The second phase of India’s Budget Session resumed on March 9, 2026
The second phase of India’s Budget Session resumed on March 9, 2026, with political tensions expected to dominate proceedings in Parliament. The Lok Sabha is set to witness a heated debate after the Opposition moved a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla.
The motion, signed by 118 Opposition MPs including Congress leaders Mohammad Jawed, K. Suresh and Mallu Ravi, accuses the Speaker of alleged bias in conducting the House. As per parliamentary procedure, Birla will not preside over the debate. In the absence of a Deputy Speaker, senior BJP MP Jagdambika Pal is likely to chair the proceedings.
The session will also feature an important statement from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar regarding the escalating conflict in West Asia. The government has faced criticism from Opposition parties and several former diplomats for remaining largely silent on the issue.
Jaishankar is expected to address the situation shortly before the Lok Sabha takes up the motion against the Speaker. With major political disagreements and foreign policy concerns on the agenda, the Budget Session is expected to witness intense debates and dramatic developments in Parliament.
