Samrat Choudhary Takes Oath as Bihar’s New Chief Minister

New Delhi | April 16, 2026 Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, marking a historic transition in the state’s political landscape. The oath was administered by Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at the Raj Bhavan in Patna.

This development is significant as it marks the first time a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has assumed the Chief Minister’s office in Bihar. Choudhary, who previously served as Deputy Chief Minister under Nitish Kumar, was chosen as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party and NDA alliance following Nitish Kumar’s resignation after more than two decades in power.

Alongside him, two Deputy Chief Ministers from the Janata Dal (United) — Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav — also took oath, reflecting the coalition’s power-sharing arrangement.

Senior leaders including Jagat Prakash Nadda, Nitin Nabin and B. L. Santhosh were present at the ceremony.

Samrat Choudhary began his political career in 1990 and became a minister in 1999 under Rabri Devi. Over the years, he has handled key departments such as Urban Development and Panchayati Raj.

With this swearing-in, Bihar enters a new political phase, with the BJP expressing confidence in accelerated development and governance under Choudhary’s leadership.
