Row Intensifies Over Mamata Banerjee Refusing to Resign After Bengal Poll Defeat

A major political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign despite her party’s electoral defeat.

Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani strongly criticized the decision, calling it “unforgivable” and against democratic principles.

In an interview, Jethmalani stated that once election results are officially certified by the Election Commission, a Chief Minister who has lost the mandate cannot continue in office. He said Mamata Banerjee should have resigned voluntarily after the results were declared.

He further argued that if she refuses to step down, the Governor has the constitutional authority to remove her from office. According to Jethmalani, if necessary, the Governor could even seek police assistance to enforce such action.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has firmly denied that she lost the election. She alleged that nearly 100 seats belonging to her party were “snatched away” and accused the government and the Election Commission of acting in collusion during the electoral process.

Responding to these claims, Jethmalani said that if Banerjee possesses evidence supporting the allegations, she should approach the court and challenge the results legally instead of refusing to resign.

The issue has triggered a sharp political debate in West Bengal, with opposition leaders demanding constitutional action while TMC supporters continue to back Mamata Banerjee’s claims regarding the election process.
