Headmaster Suspended After SP MLA Celebrates Akhilesh Yadav's Birthday at Government School in Kanpur

A political controversy has erupted in Kanpur after a government school headmaster was suspended over a birthday celebration for held inside a primary school campus.

The incident took place on July 1 at a government primary school in Parmat, where reportedly arrived without prior notice to celebrate the Samajwadi Party chief's birthday. According to officials, a party banner was displayed, a cake was cut, and a programme was organised for schoolchildren.

Following complaints and objections raised by leaders of the (BJP), the Basic Education Department initiated an inquiry. Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Hari Om Singh suspended headmaster Navin Kumar Tripathi, stating that he had allowed political activities on school premises and failed to carry out other official responsibilities assigned to him. A departmental inquiry committee has also been constituted to investigate the matter.

In his written explanation, the headmaster said that had earlier planned a school uniform distribution programme, which was later rescheduled to July 6 due to the TET examination. He claimed that MLA Amitabh Bajpai arrived at the school without prior information, installed a photograph of Akhilesh Yadav, cut a cake, and distributed uniforms to students.

MP Ramesh Awasthi denied any involvement in the birthday event, saying he had only discussed measuring students for uniforms and had planned to distribute them later.

Defending himself, Amitabh Bajpai said he has been celebrating his own birthday and Akhilesh Yadav's birthday in government schools for the past ten years by distributing uniforms and educational materials to underprivileged children. He maintained that he cut the cake separately and not with students. He also questioned the suspension of the headmaster and raised concerns over alleged cash-related references mentioned in the headmaster's letter.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Suresh Awasthi accused the Samajwadi Party of using government institutions for political purposes. He alleged that the celebration inside a school reflected an attempt to politicise educational institutions and criticised the event for being held on school premises.

The inquiry is currently underway, and education authorities are expected to determine whether any further action is warranted based on the findings.
