Opposition Slams PM Modi’s Address to Nation, Calls It ‘Election Speech’

Opposition parties have strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address to the nation, calling it a “political and election-driven speech” delivered amid ongoing assembly elections in several states. They have accused the Prime Minister of violating democratic norms and misusing the Model Code of Conduct.

The address came a day after the Constitution Amendment Bill related to women’s reservation failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. During his speech, PM Modi targeted the Congress and its allies, accusing them of obstructing women’s empowerment and “killing” the reservation effort. He also apologized to women and assured that his government remains committed to their upliftment.

In response, leaders from parties such as CPI(M), TMC, RJD, and CPI described the speech as an act of political desperation following the government’s setback in Parliament. They argued that since the women’s reservation had already been notified through a government gazette on April 16, the entire episode appeared to be unnecessary and politically motivated.

CPI(M) leader John Brittas stated that no Prime Minister had previously used a national address to openly attack the opposition, calling it a break from democratic tradition. CPI leader P. Sandosh Kumar termed the speech “hollow,” accusing the government of avoiding accountability.

RJD MP Manoj Jha demanded that the Election Commission include the cost of the televised address in the BJP’s election expenditure, alleging misuse of public resources. TMC leader Saket Gokhale also echoed similar concerns, calling it a violation during ongoing elections.

Opposition leaders further accused the government of using women’s issues for political gain, intensifying the political confrontation over the issue.
