Mamata Banerjee’s TMC Faces Setback in Bengal as 101 Councillors Resign After Election Defeat

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is reportedly facing a major political crisis after suffering a heavy defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections. According to reports, 101 councillors from various municipalities across the state have resigned, indicating growing unrest within the party at the grassroots level.

Following the change in power in West Bengal, the party has allegedly been witnessing internal conflicts, defections, and rebellion among local leaders. Reports also claim that 17 councillors and local party leaders have been arrested over allegations related to corruption and illegal extortion, adding to the party’s troubles.

Municipalities Witness Multiple Resignations The resignations have reportedly come from several municipalities across the state:

North Barrackpore – 15 councillors Garulia – 18 councillors Contai – 14 councillors Halisahar – 16 councillors Bhatpara – 30 councillors Diamond Harbour – 8 councillors Trouble in TMC Stronghold Diamond Harbour

Diamond Harbour, considered a major TMC stronghold and represented in Parliament by Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, has also witnessed political turbulence. On Monday, eight TMC councillors reportedly resigned from the municipality, raising concerns for the party in one of its key regions.

Since losing power in the state, the party is said to be weakening at both municipal and booth levels, making political recovery increasingly difficult. Major Challenge Before Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee, who came to power in 2011 after ending 35 years of Left rule in West Bengal, now faces one of the toughest political phases of her career. After ruling the state for 15 years, the party’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections has created a new challenge — rebuilding and reorganising the TMC.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee had stated that leaders who wished to leave the party were free to do so, asserting that she could rebuild the organisation independently.
