Air India’s Delhi-San Francisco Flight Returns Midway Due to Technical Snag

According to reports, Flight AI173, operated by a Boeing 777-337(ER) aircraft, took a U-turn while flying through Chinese airspace and safely returned to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport as a precautionary measure.
In an official statement, Air India said that the Delhi-San Francisco flight returned to its origin under established safety protocols after a technical snag was detected.
“On May 27, Flight AI173 operating from Delhi to San Francisco returned to Delhi due to a technical issue, in accordance with prescribed safety procedures. The aircraft landed safely and will now undergo technical checks,” the airline said.
The airline has not yet disclosed the exact nature of the technical fault. Passengers were safely deboarded after landing, and further arrangements are expected to be made for affected travelers.
The incident highlights the aviation industry’s emphasis on safety-first protocols, where aircraft are often diverted or returned if even minor technical concerns arise during long-haul international operations.
