Major Political Shock for AAP: Seven Rajya Sabha MPs Join BJP, Congress Finds New Opportunity
Defections to BJP expose cracks within AAP, boost BJP’s strength in Rajya Sabha, and open fresh political space for Congress ahead of key elections.
India’s political landscape witnessed a major upheaval after seven Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), creating a storm across national politics. The dramatic shift came at a crucial time when Arvind Kejriwal is trying to protect AAP’s stronghold in Punjab and expand the party’s influence in Gujarat after losing Delhi.
The political shock became more intense following senior leader Raghav Chadha’s press conference on Friday, which exposed the seriousness of the crisis. BJP’s strategic political move reportedly went unnoticed by AAP leadership, leaving the party stunned. After losing Delhi to BJP, Kejriwal had been focused on rebuilding the party’s momentum, but this sudden rebellion has dealt a major setback to his plans.
Adding to the embarrassment, AAP had recently replaced Raghav Chadha with Ashok Mittal as its Rajya Sabha leader, but he too shifted to BJP. This has raised serious concerns about the party’s internal leadership and political stability.
For BJP, however, this is being seen as a significant strategic victory. In Punjab, where the party has traditionally struggled to establish a strong political base, it has now gained six influential Rajya Sabha MPs and strengthened its numbers in the Upper House. This development could prove highly beneficial for BJP’s national political calculations.
Meanwhile, Congress appears to be the silent beneficiary of this political drama. AAP had once weakened Congress significantly in Delhi and Punjab. In Gujarat too, AAP managed to dent Congress’s traditional vote bank and secure national party status. Kejriwal often criticized Congress, saying voting for the party was pointless because its MLAs eventually joined BJP, even comparing the relationship between Congress and BJP to that of “husband and wife.”
Now, with AAP’s own MPs defecting to BJP in such large numbers, those attacks may no longer hold the same political weight. Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring reacted strongly, stating that this outcome was expected considering the way these MPs were selected and sent to the Rajya Sabha.
This major political development has not only weakened AAP’s national image but also reshaped the opposition narrative ahead of upcoming electoral battles across the country.
