The second phase of the Budget Session of Parliament begins today and will continue until April 2. The Lok Sabha is set to witness a significant political development as it takes up a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla.
The notice for the resolution has been submitted by three Congress MPs — Mohamed Jawed, K. Suresh and Mallu Ravi. If the resolution is taken up for discussion, Om Birla will not preside over the proceedings and will instead sit among other members in the House.
The Opposition has accused the Speaker of acting in a partisan manner. The motion has been signed by 118 Members of Parliament from several parties, including Congress, the Samajwadi Party, the DMK and Left parties, though the All India Trinamool Congress did not sign the notice.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to make a statement in the Lok Sabha regarding the ongoing situation in West Asia.
In the Rajya Sabha, members are expected to hold a discussion on the functioning of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change during the session.
