Election Commission Orders Transfer of Five IPS Officers Ahead of Assam Assembly Polls
New postings made to strengthen poll preparedness for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
The Election Commission of India has ordered the transfer and posting of five Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in Assam as part of preparations for the upcoming 2026 Legislative Assembly elections.
In an official communication dated March 16, 2026, the Commission directed the Chief Secretary of the Government of Assam to implement the transfers with immediate effect. The move comes after the Commission reviewed the poll preparedness in the state.
According to the order, Somalin Shubhdarshini (IPS 2019) has been posted as SSP of Majuli, while R. Sheetal Kumar (IPS 2020) will serve as SSP South Salmara. Anchal Chauhan (IPS 2020) has been appointed as SSP of Sadiya, Sudhakar Singh (IPS 2013) as SSP Chirang, and Mohan Lal Meena (IPS 2016) as SSP Dhemaji.
The Commission has directed that the new postings must be implemented immediately, and a compliance report regarding the joining of the officers must be submitted by 11:00 AM on March 17, 2026.
Additionally, the Commission stated that officers who have been transferred out should not be posted in any election-related duties until the completion of the election process.
The decision is part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure a fair, transparent, and smooth conduct of the Assembly elections in Assam.
