Congress Decides to Support Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu Government Formation

New Delhi: The Congress party has decided to support TVK chief Vijay in forming the government in Tamil Nadu following a late-night emergency meeting of the Tamil Nadu Congress Political Affairs Committee (PAC) on Tuesday.

According to reports, the meeting was convened by AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar to discuss the party’s stand on extending support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The virtual meeting, held via Zoom, saw senior Congress leaders expressing support for actor-turned-politician Vijay.

Sources confirmed that the Tamil Nadu Congress PAC unanimously resolved to back Vijay in the interest of forming a “secular government” in the state.

Earlier, Congress leaders had claimed that Vijay formally sought the party’s support to form the government. The Congress high command reportedly directed the Tamil Nadu unit to take the final call while considering the sentiments of the people of the state.

Senior Congress leaders stated that although the party had contested the Assembly elections in alliance with the DMK, the current decision was taken to ensure the formation of a secular administration and to prevent the BJP or its allies from gaining control in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, top Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, held a crucial meeting at Kharge’s residence on Tuesday evening to discuss the post-election political scenario in the southern state.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal said that Vijay had requested Congress support to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

He stated that Congress remains committed to supporting a secular government that protects the spirit of the Constitution and asserted that the BJP and its representatives should not be allowed to govern Tamil Nadu “in any manner.”

TVK, led by Vijay, won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, falling short of the majority mark. The party now requires the support of at least 10 MLAs to form the government. The election results were declared on Monday.
