BJP Set to Form First Government in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari Likely to Become Chief Minister
Amit Shah Arrives in Kolkata Ahead of BJP Legislature Party Meeting
In a historic political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to form its first-ever government in West Bengal after defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2026 Assembly elections. The BJP legislature party will meet in Kolkata on Friday to formally elect its leader, with senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari emerging as the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post.
The swearing-in ceremony of the State’s first BJP government is scheduled to take place at Brigade Parade Ground on May 9.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata on Friday morning to attend the crucial legislature party meeting and the oath-taking ceremony preparations. Soon after landing at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport around 11:10 am, Shah visited the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple and offered prayers along with BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and senior party leaders.
The BJP’s victory marks the end of the TMC’s 15-year rule in Bengal and is being viewed as one of the biggest political setbacks for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Although the BJP has not officially announced its Chief Ministerial candidate, Suvendu Adhikari’s name has gained strong momentum after his major electoral wins. Adhikari retained Nandigram — the constituency where he famously defeated Mamata Banerjee in 2021 — and also wrested control of Bhabanipur, considered a stronghold of the TMC chief.
Meanwhile, political tensions continue to rise across the State following incidents of post-poll violence. On May 6, unidentified gunmen allegedly shot dead a close aide of Suvendu Adhikari in North 24 Parganas district, intensifying concerns over law and order.
Adding to the political drama, West Bengal Governor R. N. Ravi dissolved the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, paving the way for the formation of the new government.
Despite the election defeat, Mamata Banerjee has claimed that the verdict was the result of a “conspiracy” and stated that she would not resign voluntarily as Chief Minister.
Political analysts believe the BJP’s victory in Bengal is not just an electoral success but also a major ideological breakthrough for the party in a State that had long remained outside its political influence.
