BCI Seeks Details on Mamata Banerjee’s Advocate Status After Calcutta High Court Appearance
The Bar Council of India has sought clarity on whether Mamata Banerjee is still enrolled as an advocate after appearing in lawyer’s robes at the Calcutta High Court.
New Delhi, May 14, 2026: The Bar Council of India has sought detailed information from the West Bengal State Bar Council regarding the advocate enrolment status of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following her recent appearance at the Calcutta High Court wearing a lawyer’s gown.
The development comes after Mamata Banerjee personally appeared before the Calcutta High Court on Thursday and reportedly made legal submissions in connection with a case related to post-election violence in West Bengal. Her appearance in advocate attire drew attention, prompting the Bar Council of India to seek official clarification.
In a formal communication to the secretary of the West Bengal State Bar Council, the BCI requested that complete details be submitted by May 16. The council asked for Banerjee’s advocate enrolment number, the date of enrolment, and whether her name currently remains on the official State Roll of Advocates.
The BCI also sought clarity on whether Banerjee had ever informed the Bar Council about suspension or cessation of legal practice during her tenure as Chief Minister. Additionally, it requested records relating to the validity of any certificate of practice issued in her name and whether it remains active or suspended.
The communication further emphasized that all details should be verified through official records, including enrolment registers, certificates of practice, suspension records, and related administrative documents. The Bar Council has also requested certified copies of all relevant records with official authentication.
The matter has sparked legal and political attention, as rules framed by the Bar Council of India prescribe specific dress codes and professional standards applicable to advocates appearing before courts, including the wearing of advocate robes and bands.
