Dalgaon tops with 94.57% turnout, Amri records lowest at 70.40%; polling concludes across 126 seats amid enthusiasm and sporadic violence
New Delhi , April 9: Assam witnessed a massive democratic turnout in the 2026 Assembly elections, with voter participation reaching an impressive 85.64%, surpassing the 82.04% recorded in 2021. The polling, held in a single phase across all 126 constituencies, concluded at 5 p.m., reflecting strong public engagement despite rain and scattered incidents of unrest.
According to the Election Commission, Dalgaon registered the highest turnout at 94.57%, while Amri recorded the lowest at 70.40%. Voting took place across 31,490 polling stations in 35 districts, with long queues seen throughout the day—from early morning till closing hours.
The election features 722 candidates, with the main contest between the ruling BJP-led NDA, seeking a third consecutive term, and the Congress-led opposition aiming for a comeback.
Prominent leaders including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal cast their votes, urging citizens to participate actively in the democratic process.
Despite the festive atmosphere, the day was not without tension. Around 30 people were injured in poll-related violence, and seven individuals were arrested following clashes between rival political supporters. Additionally, an FIR was lodged in Karbi Anglong over a video allegedly filmed inside a polling station, violating election rules.
Voter enthusiasm remained high throughout the day, with turnout steadily rising from 17.87% at 9 a.m. to over 75% by mid-afternoon, showcasing strong participation from youth, women, and elderly voters alike.
With polling now complete, attention shifts to vote counting scheduled for May 4, which will determine whether the NDA retains power or Assam witnesses a political shift.
