In a dramatic political development that has shaken national politics, seven Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), delivering a major setback to Arvind Kejriwal’s political strategy. The move has sparked intense debate across the country, especially at a time when AAP is trying to safeguard Punjab and expand its footprint in Gujarat after losing Delhi.

The political tremors intensified after senior AAP leader Raghav Chadha’s press conference on Friday exposed the seriousness of the crisis. The BJP’s strategic political operation reportedly went unnoticed by AAP leadership, leaving the party unprepared for the sudden rebellion. After losing Delhi, Kejriwal had been focusing heavily on retaining Punjab and strengthening AAP’s presence in Gujarat, but this latest development has dealt a serious blow to those ambitions.

Interestingly, AAP had recently replaced Raghav Chadha with Ashok Mittal as the leader in the Rajya Sabha, but even Mittal has now shifted to the BJP camp. This has further deepened the embarrassment for the party and raised serious questions about internal stability and leadership decisions.

For the BJP, however, this political shift is being seen as a significant victory. In Punjab, where the party has traditionally struggled to build a strong presence, it has now gained not only six influential Rajya Sabha MPs but also strengthened its numbers in the Upper House of Parliament. This strategic gain could prove crucial for BJP’s national parliamentary calculations.

Meanwhile, Congress appears to be the silent beneficiary of this entire episode. AAP had originally emerged by weakening Congress in Delhi and Punjab. In Gujarat too, AAP had cut into Congress’s traditional vote bank and repeatedly accused Congress of being a “wasted vote,” with Kejriwal often claiming that Congress MLAs eventually join BJP and that both parties share a “husband-wife relationship.”

Now, with AAP’s own MPs defecting to the BJP in such large numbers, those political attacks may become difficult to sustain. Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring reacted sharply, saying this was expected considering how these MPs were selected and sent to the Rajya Sabha.

The incident has undoubtedly altered the political narrative and may significantly impact opposition politics ahead of future electoral battles.
