Several Delhi Localities Get Revised Names, Reflecting Cultural and Historical Links
Updated locality names aim to improve identification and highlight cultural, geographical, and landmark-based associations across the national capital.
In a recent development, multiple localities across Delhi have been assigned revised or extended names, highlighting cultural, religious, and geographical associations. The changes, presented in a “Before vs Now” list, have drawn public attention as they connect neighbourhood identities with nearby landmarks and historically significant areas.
Among the notable revisions, North Pitampura is now referred to as Haidpur Village, while Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 has been renamed Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar, indicating a prominent local landmark. Similarly, Prashant Vihar has been updated to Uttari Pitampura – Prashant Vihar, suggesting a clearer regional linkage.
Other areas have also received expanded identifiers. Jagatpur is now labelled Jagatpur – Wazirabad, and Derawal Nagar has been updated to Nanak Pyao – Derawal Nagar, aligning the locality with well-known adjoining zones. Khanpur has been revised to Khanpur – Vayusainabad, while Sonia Vihar is now called Nanaksar – Sonia Vihar. Additionally, West Enclave has been updated to Mangolpur Kalan – West Enclave. Such naming updates are often aimed at improving administrative clarity, postal identification, and navigational convenience, while also acknowledging cultural and historical relevance. Though authorities have not detailed the broader policy context in the circulated list, similar exercises in the past have been linked to urban mapping, civic management, and local representation.
Residents and commuters may gradually see these revised names reflected in official records, addresses, and signages. As with most civic updates, the transition is expected to be phased, allowing institutions and the public to adapt to the changes.
