President Questions Mamata Banerjee Over Absence During North Bengal Visit

A fresh political controversy has emerged in West Bengal weeks ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections after President Droupadi Murmu questioned why Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or any member of her cabinet was not present to receive her during a recent visit to North Bengal.

While addressing a gathering, the President said she was unsure why the state administration did not allow the meeting at the originally planned venue despite there being enough space. She also remarked that she considers herself a “daughter of Bengal” and described Mamata Banerjee as a younger sister, adding that she did not know whether the Chief Minister was upset with her.

Following the incident, the Government of India has asked the West Bengal government to submit a response regarding several alleged protocol lapses during the President’s visit. The Centre has reportedly sought an explanation by 5 pm.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the ruling party in the state, the All India Trinamool Congress. Sharing a video of the President’s remarks, he accused the party of treating Santhal culture casually and highlighted that President Murmu herself belongs to a tribal community.

The issue has intensified political debate in the state, especially as West Bengal prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections.
