President Murmu Criticizes Bengal Government Over Protocol Lapse During Visit
Questions raised over absence of CM Mamata Banerjee at Santali conference event.
President Droupadi Murmu has criticised the West Bengal government after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and members of her cabinet were absent during the President’s recent visit to North Bengal.
Addressing a gathering, President Murmu questioned why the state leadership was not present at the programme. Referring to the event, she said the International Santali conference venue was located far away and raised concerns about the arrangements made for the visit.
“If the President visits a place, the Chief Minister should also come. But she did not,” Murmu said while speaking to the audience.
The President further added that perhaps the organisers had hoped that no one would be able to attend and that the President might simply turn around and leave. She also remarked that she did not know why Mamata Banerjee might be angry with her.
“I don’t know why she is angry with me,” the President said, while also stating that she considers herself a daughter of Bengal and regards the Chief Minister like a younger sister.
Following the remarks, the Government of India has reportedly sought an explanation from the West Bengal administration over the alleged protocol lapses during the President’s visit. The incident has triggered a political debate in the state, especially as West Bengal prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026.
