PM Modi launches ₹11,000-crore development projects in Kerala’s Ernakulam
Infrastructure, energy and railway projects expected to boost manufacturing, connectivity and employment in the State
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth around ₹11,000 crore in Ernakulam, Kerala, aiming to accelerate the State’s infrastructure growth and support India’s vision of becoming a manufacturing and clean-energy hub.
Addressing a gathering in Kochi, the Prime Minister said that the projects will strengthen industrial capacity, improve connectivity and create employment opportunities for thousands of young people in Kerala. He congratulated the people of the State and highlighted the government’s focus on modern infrastructure and sustainable energy.
Focus on manufacturing and petrochemicals
As part of the initiatives, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a Polypropylene Unit at Kochi Refinery, which is expected to produce nearly four lakh tonnes of polypropylene annually. The unit will support key industries such as packaging, textiles, automobiles and medical devices, thereby strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem under the “Make in India” initiative.
Boost to renewable energy
Highlighting the importance of clean energy, Modi said India is rapidly emerging as a global leader in solar power generation. In line with this goal, the foundation stone for a 50-MW Floating Solar Project at West Kallada was also laid.
The Prime Minister noted that Kerala’s large number of water bodies makes it well suited for floating solar installations, which can significantly expand renewable energy capacity in the State.
Railway and transport infrastructure
Several railway infrastructure projects were also launched or completed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Railway stations at Shoranur Junction, Kuttippuram and Changanassery have been modernised to improve passenger facilities.
The electrification of a major section of the Shoranur–Nilambur railway line has also been completed. Additionally, a new train service between Palakkad in Kerala and Pollachi in Tamil Nadu has been launched, which is expected to enhance regional connectivity and travel convenience.
Major road development projects The Prime Minister also inaugurated and initiated several road infrastructure projects aimed at improving logistics and reducing travel time. A new six-lane road will strengthen connectivity to Azhikkal Port, while the six-lane Kozhikode bypass is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve transport efficiency.
According to Modi, these projects will not only boost transportation but also benefit farmers, tourism and local industries by enabling faster movement of goods and people.
Employment and economic growth The Prime Minister emphasised that investment in infrastructure directly contributes to job creation. He expressed confidence that the newly launched projects would generate thousands of employment opportunities and help realise the vision of a “Viksit Keralam” as part of the broader goal of a “Viksit Bharat”.
He concluded his address by extending his best wishes to the people of Kerala and reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to supporting the State’s development journey.
