Nitish Kumar Files Rajya Sabha Nomination, Signals Major Shift in Bihar Politics

New Delhi : Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on Thursday, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape and potentially bringing an end to his long tenure as the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar.

Kumar, who has led the state since 2005 and has taken oath as Chief Minister a record ten times, submitted his nomination papers at the Bihar Legislative Assembly in Patna. Senior leaders including Union Home Minister and BJP national president Nitin Nabin were present during the process.

Explaining his decision, Kumar said he had long wished to serve in both Houses of the Bihar Legislature as well as both Houses of Parliament. He assured the people of Bihar that the new government formed in the state would continue to receive his guidance and support.

The move has triggered intense political speculation in the state. Observers believe Kumar’s entry into the Upper House could open the possibility of a new leadership in Bihar, with discussions emerging about the potential appointment of a Bharatiya Janata Party leader as the next Chief Minister. Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised Kumar’s tenure, stating that Bihar witnessed major improvements in governance, development and law and order under his leadership.

However, opposition leaders including Tejashwi Yadav criticised the development, claiming the move could be part of a larger political strategy by the BJP.

The Election Commission of India has announced that polling for 37 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states will be held on March 16, with Bihar being one of the key states in the upcoming elections.
