Indian Navy’s First Cadet Training Ship ‘Krishna’ Launched at L&T Kattupalli Shipyard

India marked a significant step in its naval training capabilities with the launch of Krishna, the first of three Cadet Training Ships under construction at Larsen & Toubro’s Kattupalli shipyard near Chennai. The vessel, designated Yard 18003, was ceremonially launched on 16 February 2026, reflecting India’s continued progress in indigenous defence manufacturing.

The launch ceremony was conducted by Mrs Anupama Chauhan in the presence of Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, alongside senior officials from the armed forces and representatives of Larsen & Toubro. The event highlighted the growing collaboration between the Indian defence sector and domestic shipbuilders.

Indigenously designed and built, Krishna is scheduled for formal delivery to the Indian Navy by the end of 2026. The Cadet Training Ships will play a vital role in providing at-sea training for officer cadets following their basic shore-based instruction. The ships will also accommodate women cadets and trainees from friendly foreign countries, strengthening India’s maritime partnerships.

The launch underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to self-reliance and aligns with the broader national initiatives promoting domestic manufacturing and defence capability development.
