From Diwali Party to Murder Accused: Inside the Pune Trek Killing Case Involving Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary
Police allege the two conspired to kill businessman Ketan Agarwal during a trek after a secret relationship and mounting pressure over an arranged marriage.
The alleged murder of 25-year-old Pune businessman Ketan Agarwal has taken a dramatic turn, with investigators claiming that his fiancée, Siya Goyal, and her alleged boyfriend, Chetan Chaudhary, conspired to kill him during a trek to Lohagad Fort near Lonavala on June 18.
Initially treated as an accidental death, the case was reopened after Ketan's family questioned the circumstances of his fatal fall. Investigators later uncovered evidence that led to the arrest of Siya and Chetan on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Ketan, a director at his family's real estate firm, had returned to Pune in 2023 after completing his Master's degree at Babson College in the United States. He got engaged to 20-year-old Siya Goyal in February this year, and the couple was scheduled to marry in November.
According to police, Siya was unwilling to go ahead with the marriage and had allegedly developed a close relationship with Chetan Chaudhary after meeting him at a Diwali party last year. Investigators claim the two remained in constant contact and allegedly discussed plans to eliminate Ketan.
A breakthrough in the investigation came after police examined CCTV footage from the foothills of Lohagad Fort. Officers noticed a man wearing a hoodie despite the hot weather, which raised suspicion and eventually helped investigators piece together the events leading up to the incident.
During questioning, Siya reportedly told police that she had informed Ketan she did not wish to continue the relationship. Investigators, however, are still verifying her claims as part of the ongoing probe.
Police also allege that this was the second attempt to kill Ketan. According to investigators, an earlier incident occurred four days before his death during another trek, where Siya allegedly pushed him and later claimed she had done so to save him from a snake.
Call Detail Records (CDRs) have become a crucial part of the investigation. Police say the records reveal that Siya and Chetan exchanged 2,004 phone calls between January 1 and June 18, spending a combined 238 hours speaking over nearly six months.
Meanwhile, Chetan's father has denied the allegations, claiming his son is being falsely implicated and insisting that the two were only good friends.
The investigation is ongoing as police continue to examine digital evidence, witness statements, and the alleged motive behind the crime.
