Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Issues Warning to India Over Indus Waters

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has once again adopted an aggressive tone towards India, issuing a warning over the Indus Waters Treaty during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations.

Addressing an event in Islamabad, Sharif said that every drop of Pakistan’s water was a “red line” for the country. He warned that if India did not change its position, Pakistan would respond.

Sharif also referred to the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May 2025, saying that Pakistan would respond with even greater force if its sovereignty or security were challenged in the future. India had launched Operation Sindoor following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The two countries later agreed to a ceasefire following the military escalation. Sharif, in his speech, credited US President Donald Trump with playing an “effective and historic” role in facilitating the ceasefire. India, however, has consistently rejected claims that the ceasefire was brokered by the United States.

Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s strategic ties with China, describing the relationship as one that has stood firmly by Pakistan during difficult times. He further referred to Pakistan’s defence cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, portraying these partnerships as part of a broader regional and Muslim-world security framework.

His remarks come amid continued tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly over water-sharing arrangements and the Indus Waters Treaty.
