SC Rebukes FSSAI Over Packaged Food Warning Labels

The Supreme Court has strongly reprimanded the Centre and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over delays in introducing clear front-of-pack warning labels for packaged foods containing high levels of salt, sugar and saturated fat.

A bench of Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran expressed displeasure over the lack of progress despite earlier directions. The court stressed that consumers should be able to see important nutritional information clearly before purchasing packaged food.

The Supreme Court observed that front-of-pack warning labels could play a crucial role in educating consumers, especially children, about the potential health risks associated with junk food. The court also noted that the matter concerns public health and indicated that it may intervene if the government does not take adequate action.

What Is Front-of-Pack Labelling?

Front-of-pack labelling means displaying prominent information about the levels of salt, sugar and saturated fat on the front of a food package. The aim is to help consumers quickly understand the nutritional risks and make informed choices.

The issue has gained importance amid concerns over rising obesity, diabetes and heart-related diseases. The petitioners have argued that existing nutritional information is not prominent enough and that clearer front-of-pack warnings are needed.
