Kharge Raises ‘Stage Purification’ Issue in Parliament

A political uproar erupted in the Rajya Sabha on the final day of the Monsoon Session over Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s allegation that a stage in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, was “purified” after he addressed a rally there.

Kharge said the incident deeply hurt him because he is a Dalit. He alleged that BJP workers purified the stage after his rally, calling the act an insult to his dignity. Kharge said he does not make an issue of his Dalit identity, but such an incident amounted to practising untouchability.

Responding to Kharge, Union Minister and BJP president J.P. Nadda said the government condemned the reported incident and assured that it would be investigated. Nadda said the government regretted the incident and did not support such behaviour.

However, Nadda also urged Kharge not to continue making allegations against the BJP while the matter is being investigated.
