Canada to Supply Uranium to India; Strategic Pact Expands Defence and Energy Cooperation

India and Canada have finalized a uranium supply agreement following a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart. The deal is expected to strengthen India’s nuclear energy production, which currently contributes nearly 3% to total electricity generation.

Officials confirmed that the agreement includes provisions for long-term uranium shipments aimed at boosting India’s 22 operational nuclear reactors. India plans to expand nuclear capacity to 22,480 MW by 2031–32, nearly doubling its current installed capacity.

Beyond energy, the pact outlines cooperation in defence manufacturing, critical minerals, and advanced technology research. Bilateral trade between the two nations currently stands at over $8 billion annually, with projections suggesting a 25% increase over the next 5 years.

Strategic analysts believe the agreement diversifies India’s fuel supply chain amid global geopolitical uncertainties. The development also positions India to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while meeting rising energy demands driven by 7% annual economic growth.
