Assam to Get First Emergency Landing Facility on Highway Stretch in Dibrugarh
Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate strategic ELF on Moran bypass, boosting national security and disaster response capabilities in the North East
New Delhi: Assam is set to witness a landmark development in strategic infrastructure with the inauguration of an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Moran bypass in the Dibrugarh district on 14 February 2026. The facility, the first of its kind in India’s North East, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and dedicated to the nation. Designed as a dual-use asset, the ELF enables a designated stretch of the national highway to function as an alternative runway during emergencies. The strip is engineered to support landing and take-off operations for fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters, significantly enhancing operational flexibility during contingencies. Officials highlighted the ELF’s critical role in strengthening national security and improving rapid response capabilities. The infrastructure is also expected to be highly valuable during Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions, particularly in remote and inaccessible areas of Assam and the wider region. The inauguration ceremony is anticipated to draw the presence of the Governor and Chief Minister of Assam, along with senior civil and military leaders. The initiative marks a major step in bolstering the North East’s strategic preparedness and disaster-response framework, reflecting the government’s focus on integrating civilian infrastructure with defence readiness.
