Imagine using 20,000 litres of water to transport a single animal across India. It may sound unbelievable, but that's exactly what's being planned for Satish, a hippopotamus from Kanpur Zoo, whose carefully managed 700-kilometre journey to Indore Zoo is now making headlines.
The unusual relocation is part of a rare animal exchange programme between the two zoos. While Kanpur Zoo will receive a lioness, Indore Zoo will welcome Satish, a healthy adult hippo chosen for his excellent health and calm temperament.
But moving a hippopotamus isn't as simple as loading it into a truck.
Hippos spend nearly 80% of their lives in water, and staying out of it for long periods can seriously damage their skin. To protect Satish during the journey, zoo officials have created a unique transport plan. A specially designed cage will carry two large water tanks that will continuously spray water over his body, ensuring he remains cool and hydrated throughout the trip.
The 700-km journey is expected to take around 10 days, as wildlife transport rules limit the vehicle's speed to 70 km/h. Along the route, officials have already identified highway stops with working tube wells, where Satish will be given full-body showers and the water tanks will be refilled.
In total, nearly 20,000 litres of water is expected to be used during the journey—a figure that has sparked widespread discussion on social media.
Zoo authorities say the exchange is beneficial for both facilities. Kanpur Zoo needs a lioness to strengthen its breeding programme, while Indore Zoo has long been looking for a healthy hippopotamus.
