BCCI Rejects Rohit Sharma Retirement Speculation, Warns Selectors Over Leaks

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly denied speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's ODI retirement and reportedly cautioned the national selection committee against leaking confidential discussions related to players' futures.
The controversy began after media reports claimed that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel had informed Rohit Sharma that he was no longer part of India's long-term ODI plans beyond the ongoing England series. The reports fueled speculation that the third ODI at Lord's could be the veteran opener's final international appearance in the 50-over format.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed those claims, making it clear that the Lord's ODI will not be Rohit Sharma's farewell match. His statement effectively put an end to widespread retirement rumors that had dominated headlines in recent days.
According to reports, the BCCI is unhappy that private conversations between selectors and the Indian captain found their way into the media. The board has reportedly instructed the selection committee to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive discussions involving players' careers and future plans.
Reports also suggest that discussions over Rohit Sharma's ODI future have been ongoing for some time and that head coach Gautam Gambhir was aware of the developments. Despite the speculation, Rohit is reportedly not considering immediate retirement and has reiterated his desire to represent India at the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.
Conflicting reports, however, continue to emerge. While one section maintains that Rohit remains committed to extending his ODI career, another claims the veteran batter is disappointed with the approach of the selectors and team management, leaving the door open for a possible decision in the future.
Rohit's performances in ODIs this year have fallen below his usual standards. In eight innings, he has scored 241 runs at an average of 30.12, registering just one half-century. During the ongoing England series, he managed scores of only 11 and 26 in the first two matches.
Earlier reports had also suggested that the selectors held discussions with both Rohit Sharma and young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal regarding the team's future plans. The selection committee is believed to be keen on providing Jaiswal with an extended run in the ODI side, viewing him as a key part of India's long-term white-ball setup after his encouraging performances in limited opportunities.
