Poland Claims PM Modi Helped Prevent Russian Nuclear Strike in 2022
Polish minister says PM Modi's influence over Putin helped avert a nuclear escalation during the Ukraine war.
New Delhi: Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a crucial role in preventing Russia from using tactical nuclear weapons during the Ukraine war in late 2022.
Speaking after the India-Poland Joint Economic Commission meeting in New Delhi, Bartoszewski said Russian President Vladimir Putin is among the few world leaders who listens closely to PM Modi. He credited India's decades-long relationship with Russia and the former Soviet Union for giving the Indian Prime Minister significant diplomatic influence over the Kremlin.
According to the Polish minister, PM Modi used this influence in 2022 to persuade President Putin not to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine. He added that India remains one of the few countries capable of maintaining dialogue with both Moscow and Kyiv, making its diplomatic role significant in efforts to reduce tensions.
The remarks have renewed attention on India's approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Uzbekistan in September 2022, PM Modi told President Putin that "today's era is not an era of war," a statement widely seen as India's call for peace and diplomacy.
India has consistently advocated dialogue while maintaining strategic ties with Russia. Despite Western pressure, New Delhi has continued purchasing discounted Russian crude oil, citing energy security. At the same time, PM Modi has maintained engagement with both President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, including a visit to Kyiv in 2024.
Bartoszewski also praised India's position on the Iran conflict and reiterated Poland's support for India's bid for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.
While the Polish minister's remarks have drawn international attention, no independent public evidence has been presented to verify the specific claim that PM Modi directly prevented Russia from using nuclear weapons in 2022. The statement reflects Poland's assessment of India's diplomatic influence over Moscow.
