Pakistan’s Army Chief and Field Marshal Asim Munir has seen his global influence rise significantly over the past year, with his diplomatic reach now extending far beyond Pakistan’s borders. His growing international profile, especially among Muslim-majority nations and key global powers, has positioned him as one of the most influential figures in the region.
A major reason behind this rise is Pakistan’s role in regional conflict management, particularly during last year’s India-Pakistan tensions and the recent US-Iran ceasefire negotiations. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire with Iran just hours before it was set to expire.
Trump stated that the extension came after requests from Pakistan’s Chief of Defense Forces Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He also publicly referred to Munir as his “favorite Field Marshal” on multiple occasions, highlighting the unusual level of direct engagement between the two leaders.
According to reports by Al Jazeera, the United States and Iran had initially agreed to a two-week ceasefire on April 8 through Pakistan’s mediation. The agreement followed intense backchannel diplomacy involving direct talks between Asim Munir, US Vice President JD Vance, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
On April 11, Munir personally welcomed both the US delegation led by JD Vance and the Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf for peace talks in Pakistan.
This development highlights Pakistan’s growing strategic role in Middle East diplomacy and Asim Munir’s emergence as a powerful geopolitical figure on the global stage.
