Jaishankar, Iran FM Araghchi Hold Talks Amid Rising West Asia Tensions

New Delhi, April 6, 2026: Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi spoke with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar over the phone on Sunday. The discussion centered on the rapidly evolving regional situation and its global implications.

Jaishankar confirmed the conversation through a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting that this was the sixth interaction between the two leaders since the conflict in Iran began. Their last exchange took place on March 21, underscoring ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

The talks come at a time when Iran is increasing diplomatic outreach to friendly countries, even as the United States continues its strong rhetoric against Tehran.

A key focus of the discussion was the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. The route carries nearly 20% of the world’s oil and LNG supplies, making it crucial for global energy markets.

Recent limitations imposed by Iran on vessel movement through the strait have triggered a rise in international oil and gas prices. However, Iran has allowed ships from friendly countries, including India, to pass—providing partial relief.

For India, which depends heavily on West Asia for energy imports, stability in the region and uninterrupted access through the Strait of Hormuz remain critical. The government continues to monitor the situation closely as geopolitical tensions persist.
