PIL in Supreme Court Challenges Mandatory E20 Petrol Rollout

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court of India challenging the implementation of the government's 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) policy. The petition calls for mandatory consumer awareness measures, clear fuel labelling at petrol pumps, and the availability of regular petrol for vehicles that are not compatible with E20 fuel.

The petition has been filed by advocate Narendra Mishra, who argues that consumers have the right to know the exact ethanol content in the fuel they purchase. It seeks directions requiring all petrol pumps to clearly display the percentage of ethanol blended in the fuel on dispensing nozzles as well as on fuel receipts.

According to the petitioner, selling ethanol-blended petrol—particularly E20—without informing consumers violates their rights, as many older vehicles were not designed to operate on higher ethanol blends. The plea also urges authorities to ensure that owners of such vehicles continue to have access to conventional petrol.

The Supreme Court is expected to consider the petition, which raises concerns over consumer protection, fuel transparency and the impact of E20 fuel on older automobiles.
