Sonam Wangchuk Detained from Jantar Mantar, Supporters Allege Police Assault
Supporters claim activist was forcibly taken away during his hunger strike, accuse Delhi Police of using excessive force.
New Delhi: Supporters of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk have alleged that Delhi Police forcibly detained him from the Jantar Mantar protest site on Saturday morning, where he had been observing a hunger strike.
Abhijeet Deepke, founder and president of the Cockroach Janata Party, claimed that Wangchuk was taken away by police around 7 a.m. "When I left to freshen up around 7 a.m., police personnel arrived and dragged Sonam sir away while allegedly abusing him. He is a 60-year-old man who had been on a hunger strike for the past 20 days. Delhi Police forcibly took him away, and we still don't know where he has been taken," Deepke said.
Deepke further alleged that he was assaulted by police while heading to Jantar Mantar after learning about Wangchuk's detention.
"As soon as I got the information, I started coming to Jantar Mantar, but the police also assaulted me. These are not police personnel; they are RSS goons. I returned to my country from abroad—am I a criminal? They beat me on the streets," he alleged.
There has been no immediate official response from Delhi Police regarding the allegations. The claims made by Wangchuk's supporters could not be independently verified at the time of publication.
