LPG Prices Across Indian Cities on March 12: Rates, Market Trends and What’s Driving the Cost

India is witnessing growing concerns over the availability of cooking gas as several cities report a shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders. The disruption is linked to escalating tensions in West Asia, which have affected fuel supply chains and triggered panic buying in many parts of the country.

Long queues have been seen outside LPG distribution centres in cities such as Delhi, Noida and Lucknow, as households and commercial users rush to secure cooking gas. The shortage has already begun affecting restaurants and canteens. At the Delhi High Court Lawyers’ Canteen, main course meals were temporarily stopped due to the lack of LPG cylinders.

According to reports, the crisis has also spread to states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha, where consumers are worried about possible disruptions in cooking gas supplies. LPG is widely used in India, serving more than 33 crore households, along with thousands of restaurants and hotels.

LPG Cylinder Prices in Major Cities

Amid the uncertainty, the price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder currently stands at different levels across major Indian cities:

New Delhi: ₹913 Mumbai: ₹912.50 Kolkata: ₹879–₹930 (approx.) Chennai: ₹928 Hyderabad: ₹905 Bengaluru: ₹855.50 Patna: ₹942.50

Supply Disruptions Behind the Crisis

Experts say the shortage is partly linked to disruptions in tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route. India consumes about 191 million standard cubic metres of natural gas per day, with nearly half of its demand met through imports. The current geopolitical situation has reportedly affected nearly 60 mmscmd of gas supplies from the Middle East.

Government Measures

To ensure adequate availability of cooking gas, the government has invoked provisions under the Essential Commodities Act to safeguard LPG supplies. Officials have also appealed to citizens not to panic or rush to book cylinders unnecessarily.

Meanwhile, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has issued advisories to catering units at railway stations to adopt alternative cooking methods such as microwave ovens and induction cooktops in case LPG supplies are disrupted. Catering operators have also been asked to maintain sufficient stocks of ready-to-eat food items to avoid inconvenience to passengers.

Rising Concern Among Consumers Despite the government’s assurance, anxiety among consumers remains high as the global energy crisis continues to unfold. The situation highlights India’s dependence on imported fuel and the vulnerability of domestic energy supply chains to geopolitical tensions.

If the disruptions continue, experts warn that the LPG shortage could further impact households, small businesses and the hospitality sector across the country.
