E20 Petrol Controversy: Government Says Mileage Drop Cannot Be Blamed on Fuel Alone

The debate over E20 petrol and vehicle mileage has intensified, with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry saying that a drop in mileage cannot be attributed to E20 fuel alone.

According to the ministry, fuel efficiency depends on several factors, including driving habits, traffic and road conditions, vehicle maintenance, tyre pressure and air-conditioner usage.

The government has maintained that E20 petrol—containing up to 20% ethanol—has undergone extensive testing and validation. These tests reportedly covered engine performance, starting, driving capability, fuel-system compatibility with different materials and resistance to corrosion.

The ministry has described E20 as “Tested. Validated. E20 Ready,” arguing that the fuel is suitable for vehicles and supports India's transition towards cleaner mobility.

Why Is E20 Raising Mileage Concerns?

Ethanol has a lower energy density than conventional petrol. This has raised concerns that higher ethanol blending could reduce fuel efficiency. There have also been questions about the long-term impact of ethanol on fuel lines, seals, pumps and other components, particularly in older vehicles.

Interestingly, the government had previously acknowledged the possibility of mileage reduction. In Parliament, Petroleum Minister of State Suresh Gopi reportedly said that vehicles designed for E10 before 2023 could experience a 3–6% reduction in fuel economy.

Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has also acknowledged concerns about E20 potentially affecting rubber components in older vehicles.

So, while the government insists that E20 is thoroughly tested and safe, the mileage debate is unlikely to disappear anytime soon—especially among owners of older vehicles.
