Nainital Goes High-Tech to Tackle Traffic Congestion With AI-Based ‘Traffic Eye’ System
Uttarakhand government introduces smart traffic monitoring at 17 locations to ease jams in the popular hill town
To tackle increasing traffic congestion in Nainital, the Uttarakhand government is set to introduce an AI-based traffic management system called “Traffic Eye.” The initiative comes under the direction of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Director General of Police Deepam Seth.
The project is being implemented under the supervision of Kumaon Range IG Riddhim Aggarwal to modernize and strengthen traffic management in the popular tourist destination.
In the first phase, 37 “Traffic Eye” devices will be installed across 17 key locations in the city. Developed with the support of Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, the AI-powered system will provide real-time traffic monitoring and smart analysis to help authorities manage vehicle movement more efficiently.
Officials said the technology will help identify congestion points, improve traffic flow, and enhance road safety during peak tourist and pilgrimage seasons. The administration believes the smart system will significantly reduce traffic jams, which have become a major concern in the hill station due to rising tourist footfall and limited road space.
The move is being seen as a major step toward transforming Nainital’s traffic infrastructure into a more modern and technology-driven system.
