Instagram Removes End-to-End Encryption for Private Chats, Meta Issues Warning to Users
Meta’s latest Instagram update has raised serious concerns over user privacy and message security.
If you use Instagram for personal or confidential conversations, experts say this latest change could significantly impact your digital privacy. Meta has officially discontinued the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature for Instagram Direct Messages, meaning chats, photos, videos, and other shared content may no longer remain fully private.
The company had already informed users about the upcoming policy change in March and advised them to download or back up sensitive chats and media before the feature was removed. E2EE, first introduced on Instagram in 2023, ensured that only the sender and receiver could access messages. With its removal, concerns are growing over the possibility of messages being scanned or accessed under certain conditions.
Cybersecurity experts believe the move is linked to growing global pressure on tech companies to strengthen online safety, particularly regarding child protection. Earlier this year, a New Mexico jury imposed a $375 million fine on Meta over allegations that the platform failed to properly protect users from harmful content and child exploitation-related activities.
By removing encryption, Meta may now be able to detect and monitor suspicious activity more effectively, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), online grooming, and other illegal behavior. Governments in the US, UK, and European Union have been demanding stricter oversight of private messaging platforms through regulations such as the UK Online Safety Act and the EU’s Chat Control proposals.
At present, the change only affects Instagram, while Meta’s other messaging services continue operating without similar announcements.
